HDTV Reviews: LG Electronics 55UF6800 55-inch 4K Ultra HD Smart LED TV (2015 Model)

As LG begins to roll out its 2015 lineup of HDTVs, it’s becoming clear that the future of television has arrived. This model, the LG Electronics 55UF6800 55-inch 4K Ultra HD Smart LED TV, is more like a wall-mounted computer than anything you’d find in the tubed and antennaed history of the television. The days of aluminum-foil extensions and hazy oscillating pictures is over. We are now in the era of precision-crafted television sets with on-board operating systems and 4K ultra-HD display streaming whatever program you care to watch. Interesting, it seems, but does it live to the expectation of users just as it is advertized?

There’s no doubt that the 55UF6800 is beautiful, and certainly more powerful than any TV that’s even five years old. But is it worth buying? This model is safely on the middle-end of what LG is doing today, and the price reflects that. You can trust LG to make a middle-range television that competes with most people’s high-end television. Let’s take a closer look and see if that’s also true of this model.

4K Ultra HD

We can remember the time when 1080P struck the ear as the gold standard in high-definition display. Yet this year, almost all of LG’s new TVs, including the 55UF6800, have transcended “full HD” to bring you 4K Ultra high-def, with almost quadruple the pixel density of the 1080P. At this level, the picture is truly incredible. And with HEVC decoding, streaming platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime will also appear in 4K.

webOS

LG introduced the webOS platform only last year, and this year every TV they’re releasing will come equipped with it. LG is convinced that internet distribution is the future of television, and gives you all of the tools you need to integrate your streaming accounts to your TV without having to fuss around with your laptop and cables. YouTube, Amazon Prime, Netflix, Spotify – all these and more are now available through your TV. This has been made possible, thanks to the webOS technology being used to bring users the contents they prefer, for whatever purpose that is.

IPS Panel

The stunning ultra HD display is enhanced by the magic of the IPS panel. This clever workaround solves a problem that some people weren’t even aware: now whatever you’re watching can be clearly seen from anywhere with a view of the screen. No more fading colors as you move away from the center. The show is beautiful no matter where you’re sitting.

Pros

  • Beautiful UltraHD display.
  • Convenient webOS system.
  • Large screen and slim, light design.
  • HEVC decoding improves many full HD pictures.
  • IPS panel

Cons

  • Doesn’t quite stand up to the quality of LG’s high-end OLED displays.
  • Refresh Rate (120Hz) could be higher.

There is no doubt that this is a quality television set, and that any of your favorite shows will truly come to life on your wall or entertainment center. It’s just shy of the cutting edge of what LG is doing, but it’s incredibly powerful for a mid-range television from a high-end television producer. If you’re in the market for a new TV and you’ve got space on your wall, you should strongly consider buying the LG Electronics 55UF6800 55-inch 4K Ultra HD Smart LED TV.
